Lev, Meir (Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, N.Y.), Raymond H. Alexander, and Stanley M. Levenson. Stability of the Lactobacillus population in feces and stomach contents of rats prevented from coprophagy. J. Bacteriol. 92: 13-16. 1966.-Lactobacilli were enumerated in the feces of rats prevented from coprophagy by tail-cupping. No differences were found when numbers of these organisms were compared with lactobacilli in feces of control rats, without tail-cups. High and similar numbers of lactobacilli were found in the stomachs of rats with and without tail-cups. The effect of coprophagy on fecal lactobacilli was therefore negligible.

The Effect of Drinking Yoghurt Containing Free and Microencapsulated Probiotic Bacteria on Changes of the Population of These Bacteria in the Digestive System
Background & Aims: Probiotic bacteria have beneficial effects on host's health. However, one of the most important reasons which affect the probiotic activity of a microorganism is its survival during the gut transit. Microencapsulation techniques could be applied to bacteria to improve this parameter. Methods: In this study, feces of 60 healthy volunteers were analyzed during 28-day test perio...
متن کاملIn vivo absorption of calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide from the large intestine in rats.
This study was conducted to evaluate the ability of the large intestine to absorb calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) from their sparingly water-soluble salts, and also to determine whether fructooligosaccharides (FOS) stimulate the absorption of these minerals in rat large intestine in vivo. Rats were fed Ca- and Mg-free diets with and without 5% FOS. An aqueous suspension of CaCO3 and MgO was inf...
متن کاملProblems in estimating the extent of coprophagy in the rat.
The quantity of re-ingested faeces was calculated by comparing faecal dry matter of unrestricted rats and coprophagy-restricted rats after correcting for differences in food intake. Due to high day-to-day variations of produced and re-ingested faeces it was not possible to calculate precisely the extent of coprophagy of an individual rat at a particular day with this difference method. Reliable...
متن کاملIsolation of Lactobacilli from Dairy Products and Their Effects on the Main Pathogenic Bacteria in Stomach and Intestine
Abstract Background and objective: The effects of lactobacillus Species and their metabolites on dairy products were proved as probiotics on pathogenic bacteria. The aim of this study was to isolate the lactobacillus from dairy product (Yogurt, cheese, milk and whey …) and to determine the antimicrobial activity against some pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium, E.coli, Helicobacter pyl...
متن کاملDiazoxide, a KATP Channel Opener, Prevented Ethanol-Induced Gastric Ulceration in Rats
Ethanol-induced acute gastric ulceration (EIGU) is widely studied. ATP dependent potassium channel (KATP) modulators are thought to interfere with some physiologic functions of the stomach. We have studied the effects of different doses of KATP modulators (diazoxide as agonist and glibenclamide as antagonist) on EIGU in rats. Gastric lesions were quantified. Fasting blood glucose (FBS) levels w...
